Sassafras Trees
Sassafras is such a pleasure to work.
It shares the most amazing fragrance, which usually brings back wonderful childhood memories. Each winter, Dad would take us (two boys) through the woods looking for a sassafras tree. We would dig a few pieces of the root.
Trying not to damage the tree we would carefully cover the roots back over.
Next we would take the roots into the kitchen for a wash, and place the roots in a pot of water for a short boil. The house would smell sweet and wonderful throughout the remainder of the day.
Sassafras tea, sweetened with a bit of honey is hard to beat on a cold winter day. rw
